Even though New York abruptly fired head coach Robert Saleh, they were still able to sign Davante Adams.
The Jets agreed to trade Adams to the Raiders seven days after firing their head coach, according to a report by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Tuesday. The report cited sources.
Adams will reportedly fetch a conditional third-round pick from Las Vegas, sources told Rapoport and NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero. Adams may go from being a third-round pick to a second-round pick depending on his performance in New York.
According to one source, Pelissero claimed that in order to seal the transaction, the Jets consented to pay Adams’ remaining salary.
Adams and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, with whom Adams caught passes for eight years as a Green Bay Packer, were reunited when New York acquired the three-time All-Pro.
Together, the two have amassed 7,517 yards and 68 touchdowns on 615 completions since their relationship began in 2014. Still, over Adams’ last four seasons in Green Bay, he and Rodgers improved. The Rodgers-Adams combination led the NFL in receptions (425), receiving yards (5,257), and receiving touchdowns (47) between 2018 and 2021.
The Jets want to rekindle that energy in New York, where they ended the Saleh era following a 2-3 start characterized by an identity-challenged offensive.
Thanks in large part to a struggling AFC East and the boost Adams’ presence offered, the Jets’ postseason prospects are still alive and strong under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, despite the turmoil.
The combination of Adams and third-year wide out Garrett Wilson, who came the closest to being the team’s top wide receiver, will be interesting. Given Adams’ background and his relationship with Rodgers, Wilson might be moved into a reliable number two position.
In addition to this new dangerous pair, Mike Williams will gain from having two established playmakers attracting attention as he recovers from an ACL rupture. Allen Lazard, another of Rodgers’ old favorites from Green Bay, might now be deployed more as a blocker—his strength.
The rushing game should also benefit from Adams’ acquisition, which will force defenses to divide their energies between slowing down Breece Hall and Braelon Allen in the backfield or covering another dangerous Gang Green pass catcher.
The Jets are going all out to capitalize on the brilliance of 40-year-old Rodgers with this blockbuster transaction. It was made possible by Adams’ turbulent tenure with the Raiders, during which a potential partnership gradually but inevitably fell apart.
Originally exchanged to play quarterback with an old buddy, Adams had to catch passes in Silver and Black from his collegiate signal-caller Derek Carr rather than Rodgers during the 2022 summer.
Before then-head coach Josh McDaniels benched Carr for the season’s last two games, Carr and Adams only played 15 games together, during which time Adams caught 88 passes for 1,290 yards and 12 touchdowns alongside his fellow Fresno State alum.
He relocated to New Orleans upon Carr's release
in three starting quarterbacks and McDaniels fired on Halloween, Adams had his least productive season in years during his second season in Las Vegas. Adams only averaged 11.1 yards per reception and scored eight touchdowns in 2023, his lowest performance since 2015 and second-lowest ever, even though he surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the fourth time in a row.
A ray of hope appeared when Adams openly backed Antonio Pierce’s appointment as temporary head coach and then permanent head coach during the hiring process. Adams maintained his composure by claiming he was “locked in” with the Raiders despite the persistent trade speculations during the winter, especially those involving the Jets.
Adams caught five catches for 59 yards in the Raiders’ opening game of 2024, which saw Gardner Minshew start as quarterback for the third time in as many years. He did, however, remind everyone of his abilities during the team’s comeback victory in Week 2, hauling in nine catches for 110 yards, including multiple highlight-worthy grabs, and scoring a score to help seal the game.
Then followed the humiliating defeat to the Panthers, who benched Bryce Young, the first overall pick in 2023, which started the chain of events up to this deal. Pierce blasted some players without naming them, pointing out that “business decisions” were made during the loss.
