Saints’ Derek Carr out indefinitely due to oblique

Massachusetts’s Foxboro The New England Patriots’ rookie quarterback Drake Maye is expected to take over as the starting option, a source who talked with ESPN’s Adam Schefter said.

The nine-year veteran Jacoby Bissett will be replaced by Maye, the third overall selection in the 2024 draft, as the Patriots (1-4) get ready to meet the Houston Texans on Sunday.

The Patriots defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 16-10 in their season opener, but they have already dropped their last four games. The team’s lone victory, according to first-year head coach Jerod Mayo, was “unstable” because of the low scoring. Right now, the Patriots are only scoring 12.4 points per game on average.

Even though the Patriots have been averaging roughly 10 hits each game, Bissett handled the situation brilliantly, avoiding major errors and maintaining the team’s competitiveness. This involved passing to a group of wide receivers that ranked lowest in the NFL in terms of receiving yards (342), receptions (39) and playing behind five different starting offensive line combinations.

But in recent weeks, Mayo started to question how much of the offensive difficulties were caused by the quarterback’s unpredictability rather than the quarterback’s own play. He was also conscious of Maye’s unnoticed growth.

It took until the fourth quarter of the Miami Dolphins’ 15-10 home loss on Sunday for Bissett to reach 100 passing yards.

Mayo stated on Monday that he didn’t think Bissett’s performance in the game was good enough. We performed well enough on special teams and defence, in my opinion, to win. He knows that he touches the ball every play in his role as quarterback and that we weren’t able to produce enough points to win.”

Maye will now become the fourth rookie quarterback to start a game this season, behind Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Bo Nix.

Go ahead and collect your reward if you correctly guessed that Drake Maye would become the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots in Week 6. The Patriots intend to start their third overall draft pick this Sunday when they play the Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium, according to Patriots Insider Phil Perry. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media broke the story first.

Maye is joining the team in the midst of a four-game losing run, and Bissett is having trouble leading the Patriots’ offense. With an average of just 139.2 passing yards per game, the seasoned signal-caller has only passed for two touchdowns in five games this season. He is the third-most sacked quarterback in the NFL with 17 sacks.

Many had been reluctant to throw Maye into the fire because of worries about New England’s weakness as an offensive line. But the rookie has made such great strides in his development in recent weeks that he is the most reasonable choice to guide the Patriots offense, which is in dire need of a spark.

During garbage time in the Patriots’ Week 4 loss to the New York Jets, Maye made his official NFL debut. The North Carolina native, selected third overall, was sacked twice and completed four of his eight passes for 22 yards.
