MINI x Deus Ex Machina Skeg Electric Concept: A John Cooper Inspired Rebellion

At a time when electric cars are shaping the auto industry at a rapid pace, the collaboration of MINI and Deus Ex Machina brings a unique vibe. This concept car is not just a machine, but an emotion that blends speed, performance and style. MINI has joined forces with lifestyle brand Deus Ex Machina to revive its racing heritage, resulting in the MINI John Cooper Works Skeg Electric Concept.

John Cooper Heritage Meets Surfing Culture

The Skeg Concept is a high-performance, racing-inspired electric car that creates a unique personality with its minimalist and surf-culture inspired design. MINI says the car is an example of a “clean, minimal and quiet rebellion”. Representing the name of John Cooper Works, the car is a celebration of racing history blending modern technologies and philosophies from the surfing world.

The use of lightweight fiberglass has reduced the weight of the car by 15% compared to the standard JCW Electric. Yet there is no compromise on performance as the car produces the same powerful 190 kW (258 hp) that a production MINI John Cooper Electric car does. Meaning both speed and thrill are intact, but with a lightweight edge.

John Cooper Concept with Minimalistic Interior

Talking about the interior design, MINI has kept it completely stripped-back. In keeping with surf culture, there are fiberglass trays for wetsuits, specially shaped bins and neoprene seats. The minimalist interior feels like you’re sitting inside a mobile surf shop. This is the vision of MINI and Deus – to prioritise function over form.

Holger Hampf, design head of BMW and MINI, says every detail of this extraordinary collaboration has been designed with artisanal precision. Everything feels connected to the other, and follows a distinct design language. The John Cooper heritage shines clearly here, but with a modern twist.

John Cooper Performance Numbers That Impress

The performance numbers are worth seeing. The car comes with a standard 54.2 kWh li-ion battery pack that delivers up to 250 miles in the WLTP range. But being 15% lighter means the expected range could be slightly longer, perhaps around 255 miles. Acceleration is also impressive – the standard version does 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, and the Skeg concept is expected to take less than 5.5 seconds. The racing DNA of John Cooper Works is clearly felt here.

John Cooper Works x Deus: The Skeg and The Machine

MINI and Deus showed not just one but two unique creations at the Munich Motor Show. First is The Skeg, which is designed on a JCW Electric base. The car is inspired by surfing culture and its most unique feature is its surfboard-style rear spoiler. Custom fiberglass panels and illuminated front grille further enhance its sporty yet funky design.

The second concept is The Machine, which represents motorsport heritage. It is built on a combustion-powered JCW base and aggressive styling elements like spotlights, Can-Am style rear spoiler, diffuser and rally-inspired details can be seen inside. John Cooper’s racing history is visible in every detail. Inside too, this car has been made a true racing machine – with waxed fabric dash, aluminium floor plates, hydraulic handbrake and exposed roll cage.

Both cars have a large white “X” on their roofs, giving them a strong identity as the MINI JCW x Deus collaboration.

Why the John Cooper Skeg Concept Matters

The collaboration between MINI and Deus Ex Machina is not just a design experiment, but an emotional connection. These cars celebrate racing passion, surf culture and minimalism together. Every MINI car bearing the John Cooper name has a special feel, and the Skeg concept takes it to a new height.

This electric hot hatch shows that electric cars of the future don’t have to be boring, but can be thrilling and stylish too. Both Skeg and Machine are a treat for MINI fans with their own identities and their display at the Munich Motor Show was a big attraction.
